WordPress GPL License Explained: What Buyers Can and Cannot Do

By GplSale Team · August 29th, 2026

The GNU General Public License is central to WordPress, yet it is often reduced to misleading slogans such as “everything must be free.” The GPL is about specific freedoms and obligations attached to copyrighted software. Price, support, trademarks, and hosted services are separate issues.

This plain-language overview is educational, not legal advice. For a decision involving your own distribution or a licensing dispute, consult a qualified lawyer and read the license that accompanies the exact product.

The four practical freedoms

GPL-licensed software may be run for any purpose, studied, modified, and redistributed. Source-code access makes the study and modification freedoms meaningful. A recipient can charge money for providing a copy; the GPL does not require every distributor to charge zero.

These rights explain how independent GPL stores can redistribute covered WordPress plugins and themes. The transaction provides access to a copy, while the license supplies the relevant software freedoms.

Redistribution comes with conditions

The GPL is not a public-domain dedication. Copyright remains in place, and distributors must follow the applicable version's requirements. Those can include preserving notices, supplying the corresponding source in the required manner, providing the license, and licensing covered modifications under the GPL when distributed.

Do not assume every file inside a commercial package has identical terms. Fonts, photographs, template libraries, brand assets, and connected services may have separate licenses. Check the product's actual licensing information rather than inferring rights from its WordPress compatibility alone.

GPL rights do not include official support

A developer can charge for installation help, technical support, automatic-update delivery, hosted features, and access to a customer portal. Redistributing covered code does not force that developer to support third-party customers or grant them an account.

This is the most important practical distinction when comparing an official subscription with a low-cost GPL download. Both may provide usable software code, but the surrounding service can be very different.

Automatic updates and license keys

A commercial license key often authenticates access to the vendor's update server or cloud functionality. It should not be confused with the GPL copyright license in the code. You can have permission to use and modify GPL code without having credentials for a vendor's private service.

With a redistributed ZIP, updates are commonly manual. You download a newer package, back up the site, test compatibility, and replace the installed version. Never use a key claimed to be stolen, shared without permission, or generated by a crack.

Trademarks and truthful marketing

Copyright licensing and trademark law address different things. The right to redistribute code does not mean a seller can impersonate the original company, use branding in a confusing way, or call itself an authorized partner when it is not. Independent stores should state their relationship clearly.

Modification versus “nulled” software

The GPL permits modification, but that does not make every modification trustworthy. “Nulled” packages may be altered to bypass checks and can contain unwanted or malicious code. A normal GPL redistribution does not need to promise cracked accounts or unauthorized cloud access.

Ask whether files are provided as installable software, how versions are identified, and what update process is offered. Scan downloads and test important changes on staging.

Questions buyers should ask

  • Which files are covered by the GPL or compatible terms?
  • Is the seller independent from the original developer?
  • Are official support, account access, and automatic updates included?
  • How will future versions be obtained and installed?
  • Does the site make unrealistic claims about license keys or cloud services?

The GPL supports a broad ecosystem of developers, agencies, learners, and distributors. Understanding its real scope helps buyers respect developers while exercising legitimate software freedoms—and avoids confusing code rights with services that were never included.
